WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A vigil is planned for Sunday night in memory of a 12-year-old girl who was found murdered in West Valley City Friday.

Sam Johnson, West Valley City Police Department, said the vigil for Kailey Vijil will be held at 8 p.m. at City Park, 3500 South 4500 West, in West Valley City on Sunday.

Johnson said a fund for the family has been set up in Kailey Vijil’s name at Granite Credit Union.

As of Sunday afternoon, purple ribbons were already in place at the park ahead of the vigil. The ribbons were tied around trees and posts in the area. The event will also include a balloon release.

Vijil’s body was found after her parents reported her missing, and a 15-year-old boy who allegedly enticed her away from her home and attacked her has been booked on a charge of criminal homicide. Click here for details.

“I believe a good-natured child was fooled and unfortunately, made a mistake that she paid the ultimate price for,” Chief Lee Russo, West Valley City PD, said Saturday.
