TAHITI – The captain of a beach soccer team chose to sit out the World Cup final because it was on a Sunday.

Naea Bennett, 38, is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and said he won’t play on Sundays because of his religion.

Tahiti’s 5-3 loss to Portugal wasn’t the first game the captain sat out; he doesn’t play for his national or club team on Sundays.

This was his team’s first final and third appearance in the FIFA Beach World Cup.
