PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University and Southern Utah University announced their football teams will square off for the first time on November 12, 2016.
The schools finalized an agreement Wednesday to play in Provo at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
The in-state match up helps BYU round out a 12 game schedule, they previously had a game scheduled for Nov. 12 at Cincinnati and they’ve rescheduled that game for Nov. 5.
“We needed a home game to finalize our 2016 schedule and SUU had an opening. It turned out to be a good fit for both schools,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “We look forward to hosting the Thunderbirds next year in Provo.”
The SUU Thunder-birds play in the Big Sky Conference in college football’s second tier, the Football Championship Series, where they currently rank 24th.
SUU’s head coach Ed Lamb played for BYU from 1995-1996 and spent a year with the Cougars as a graduate assistant.
“I’m grateful that the AD’s got together and scheduled it,” SUU Coach Ed Lamb said. “I’m excited that BYU would consider us worthy of being on their schedule.”
The kick-off time and broadcast plans will be announced at a later date.
