NEW YORK — The University of Utah Runnin’ Utes edged out the No. 7-ranked Duke Blue Devils at Madison Square Garden Saturday, and the 77-75 upset victory came in overtime.
Duke, No. 7 in the AP Poll, held a 60-55 lead with 4:10 left in the second half of the game, but in the waning minutes Utah fought back to tie things up at 60 and send the game into overtime.
Utah managed to grab the lead early on a 3-pointer from Brandon Taylor, and they held the lead for the remainder of the extra time. Though Duke managed to narrow the gap to 77-75 in the final seconds, it wasn’t enough and Utah held on for the win.
Jakob Poeltl notched a double-double for Utah, with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kyle Kuzman lead the Utes in scoring with 21 points while adding 8 rebounds as well.
The Runnin’ Utes improve to 8-2 overall on the season, while Duke falls to 9-1 overall.
Utah plays next on December 22 when they take on Delaware State at home in the Huntsman Center. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
