KEARNS, Utah -- A squatting incident in Kearns ended with a man in custody after he threatened a family with a machete, police said Saturday afternoon.

Officials with the Unified Police Department identified the suspect as 25-year-old Scott L. Thompson.

The incident occurred just after 10 a.m. Saturday. A family had left their home, located in the area of the 5900 South and Misty Way, due to a fire about a week ago. They returned Saturday morning to check on the residence, said Det. Ken Hansen with Unified Police.

When they arrived, Hansen said, the family found a man inside the house who threatened them with a machete.

The family called 911 and Unified Police officers were on scene within minutes, Hansen said.

Thompson was apprehended and it was also discovered the vehicle he had parked at the home was reported stolen.

Thompson faces charges of aggravated burglary  and robbery in connection with the incident.
