SALT LAKE CITY -- Fallen Salt Lake County Unified Police Officer Doug Barney is being honored by close friends and police organizations around the country.
Retired Deputy Chief Chris Bertram worked closely with Barney in the Holladay subdivision. Bertram posted on Facebook:
"When my good friend Doug Barney was killed in the line of duty today I cried in disbelief. Doug, being by your side at the hospital today and watching a hero's salute as they took you away will stay with me until we meet again."
Barney spent years serving as a deputy assigned to the city of Holladay.
The city posted a memorial on their webpage for Barney and his colleague, Officer Jon Richey, who was shot in the same incident:
"Tragedy in our city. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Officer Barney, Officer Richey and the rest of the Holladay UPD officers."
The National Honor Network told Fox 13 they will pay all funeral expenses for the Barney family. They are coming to Utah in a motorcade that will begin in Fort Worth, Texas and gather police officers in communities along the trip to Utah.
The Network supports the families of fallen police officers, firefighters and members of the military.
