RIVERTON, Utah — A man who crashed a van in Riverton allegedly carjacked one of the vehicles he had just hit, and the man was ultimately captured by an off-duty officer who spotted him fleeing on foot.

Det. Ken Hansen of the Unified Police Department said a man driving eastbound on 12600 South was reportedly running red lights. In the area of 3200 West, the van struck several cars, disabling the van.

The suspect then ran to one of the cars he hit and pulled the driver out before speeding off eastbound in that vehicle, again on 12600 South. Dispatch officials stated the injuries suffered by those involved the crash were not life-threatening.

When police began to follow that car, the man stopped at a tanning salon near 1700 West and went inside. He was arrested when an off-duty officer spotted him running out of the salon’s back door.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been released. It was not clear why the man was running red lights or what prompted him to steal a vehicle. FOX 13 News will have more information as further details emerge.
