SALT LAKE CITY — Governor Gary Herbert signed a bill Thursday that is designed to save lives.
House Bill 93 gives students the opportunity to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor even if they don't have a driver's license. The bill requires all higher education institutions to notify students of the opportunity to register.
Lawmakers hope this type of legislation catches on across the country.
"We really look for this to be another model of legislation across the United States. We really feel this is one of the first in the country to encourage students of the significance of organ donation," said Rep. Gage Froer (R-Huntsville), who sponsored H.B. 93.
Studies show less than 50 percent of 16 and 17-year-olds are getting their driver's licenses, meaning they don't register to be a donor.
