SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement Sunday morning regarding a deadly earthquake in Ecuador.
The quake, which hit Saturday, has claimed the lives of at least 235 people and injured 1,500 others. The death toll is expected to rise.
Kristen Howey, LDS Church spokeswoman, released the following statement regarding the church and its missionaries in the area:
“We are mindful of the destruction and loss of life caused by this earthquake and are praying for the people of Ecuador. Because of the widespread devastation, it is difficult to determine how members and Church facilities have been affected. We are grateful to report that all of our missionaries in the region have been contacted and are safe.”
