At about 5:50 p.m. Sunday, a man fled a store after shoplifting several items in the area of 2025 South and 900 West, according to the Salt Lake City police watch log .

With a security guard in pursuit, witnesses say they saw the suspect, later identified as Jason Vaillancourt, hit the guard in the head with a pipe, the watch log reports.

The 39-year-old guard sustained a fractured skull and was taken to a local hospital.

Utah Highway Patrol later found Vaillancourt walking along State Route 201. He was taken into custody after a short foot chase, the watch log indicates.
