SALT LAKE CITY – Utahns gathered Saturday to pay their respects to former Utah Senator Bob Bennett.

Bennett may have left the U.S. Senate in 2010, but his influence in Utah was felt for years afterward. Hundreds of people attended funeral services for Bennett Saturday.

Bennett died at his Virginia home recently after suffering from pancreatic cancer and a stroke. Saturday, family members helped lay him to rest after services at an LDS Church in Utah.

"I have lost a great friend," said former Utah Governor Mike Leavitt. "Bob Bennett will go into history as one of the best people that ever occupied a role in that way."

Leavitt added: "There are those who may have had larger titles, and those who may have been there longer, but there are few people that match his stature as a human being."

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert also shared his memories of the man.

"He was a public servant who always kept his priorities straight,” Herbert said. "There was very prominent people there today, and very common people. He touched everybody's life. He was a servant to everyone."
