MILLCREEK, Utah — Police have identified a man who was hit and killed while crossing a street in Millcreek Wednesday night.

The deceased is identified by police as 54-year-old Juan Manuel Puga-Hernandez.

Lt. Brian Lohrke of the Unified Police Department said the crash occurred in the area of 3900 South and 300 West as a woman was driving eastbound.

“She was driving along, a pedestrian started crossing the street in a non-crosswalk area, she clipped him on the side of her car, flipped him on end, he landed on the ground,” Lohrke said. “She stopped right away, started rendering medical aid and called for help.”

Puga-Hernandez died due to injuries suffered in the crash.

Lohrke said several witnesses also stopped at the scene, but no one in the area had a cell phone. He said the woman driving the car left the scene to call for help and then came back. Lohrke said they don’t normally advise drivers to leave the scene of the crash, but in this case it may have been the right call.

“In dire circumstances, nobody had a phone at the time and needed to call for help, so obviously the circumstances of that are being investigated right now, but, yeah, she did return to the scene,” he said.
