Police officer fires weapon during altercation with suspect in SLC; no injuries

SALT LAKE CITY -- Police closed 1300 South in all directions from 300 West to West Temple for several hours Saturday as they investigated an officer-involved shooting, and no one was injured during the incident.

The incident occurred in the area of 1300 South and 200 West, and things began around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when Salt Lake City PD received a report of two or three individuals trespassing.

Police at the scene said when officers arrived, a man fled on foot. Officers pursued, and the man allegedly made comments including: "I'm not going back to jail."

An altercation ensued when an officer caught up with the man, and during that altercation a shot or shots were fired. No one was struck by gunfire, and no injuries were reported.

jason-garcia-mugshotThe man who fled was identified Sunday as Jason Garcia, and police say the man was taken directly to the Utah State Prison. Police said Garcia is a parole fugitive who had a warrant out for his arrest.

All lanes of 1300 South were closed form 300 West to West Temple as authorities investigated the incident. The road reopened later Saturday night.

The officer who fired a weapon is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Salt Lake City PD said the Unified Police Department will be investigating the incident. It is standard procedure under Utah law for an outside agency to investigate shootings involving police.
