OREM, Utah — The Orem High School softball team spent the weekend scrubbing off racist and homophobic graffiti on their field.
The vandalism happened sometime Friday night into early Saturday morning.
The team first saw it when the got to the field Saturday, and they were heartbroken.
But almost immediately, the coach and team were overwhelmed with support from the community, and the team refuses to let hate win.
"Our softball family came together. It was a moment to feel united, to push back on hate, and as a team we know now that love will always win and love will always prevail," Coach Pablo Barker-Valdez said. "We need to be courageous and stand up when this shows up and have support from our community... I can't say enough words about that."
Orem Police are now investigating.
There are some things that will have to be replaced. If you'd like to help the softball team, go to foundation.alpineschools.org/donate. You can donate via PayPal by clicking "Donate," or other options are listed. You can specify a purpose for the donation, such as "Orem High Softball."
