FORT WORTH, Texas — A 9-year-old boy died of complications related to COVID-19, just days after he was healthy enough to attend school.

Jason "J.J." Boatman died at a Fort Worth hospital Tuesday.

Local school officials said J.J. was on campus at Central Elementary School in Vernon on Friday, then died Tuesday after testing positive for the coronavirus, WJBK reports.

"He was running around playing one day and by that night he was having difficulty breathing." family members said on a GoFundMe page.

The boy was flown to a hospital and placed on a ventilator. Doctors told the family that J.J.'s lungs were filled with liquid and his brain was swollen from a lack of oxygen.

"He was very strong and hung on for more than 12 hours, but at the end Covid-19 claimed another young victim." the page says.

His family said Boatman had just celebrated his birthday and "was always happy and full of life."
