ST. GEORGE, Utah — Dixie State University has postponed its 2020 football season, the university's athletics department announced Wednesday.

"The Trailblazers were slated to begin the 2020 campaign at in-state rival Southern Utah in Cedar City on Saturday, Sept. 5. However with other postponement announcements made by the Big Sky, Missouri Valley Football, Pioneer, GNAC and RMAC conferences, among others, DSU officials made the difficult decision to delay the start of the football season to this upcoming spring," a news release from DSU Athletics said.

The university cited the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic "and its effects on the intercollegiate athletics landscape and the nation as a whole" as the reason behind the postponement.

DSU plans to resume football activities in the spring 2021 semester.

"As difficult as a decision like this is, it is the right call," said DSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Jason Boothe in the news release. "There are so many factors involved, but our top priority that we cannot waiver on is the health and well-being of our student-athletes.
