PROVO, Utah — BYU students will not have opportunities to study abroad during the summer 2021 term as the COVID-19 pandemic continues and uncertainty in the feasibility for Americans to travel to other countries remains.

"We remain concerned about the health of our students. We are also at a point that we will need to start making payments and firm travel commitments and there is still too much uncertainty across the world to do this," said Timothy Lynn Elliot, the international study programs director for BYU, in an email to FOX 13.

According to an article in BYU's student newspaper "The Daily Universe," students who were already enrolled in international study programs for the summer term are being notified Tuesday of the programs' cancellation.

"[We] are 'cautiously optimistic' about our Fall programs (September to December) being able to go," Elliot's message said.
