SUMMIT CO., Utah — A small child with a teddy bear was found walking alone on a busy section of I-80 near Park City on Sunday night.
Summit County police say the 9-year-old girl was found in good condition at mile marker 143 heading eastbound. Police say the girl was missing from her home for about 3 hours before she was located.
The child's parents called police after they became aware the girl had left the family's home while in her pajamas. Security cameras showed the child walking out the front door of the home between 11:30 p.m. and midnight.
A resident called police to say a child was seen walking in the Newpark area, but authorities were unable to locate the girl.
Later in the evening, another caller alerted police to say they had seen the girl walking down the highway north of the Kimball Junction area. Within minutes, officers were able to find the child at that location.
The girl was released to the custody of her parents shortly thereafter.
"The reunion was emotional, I can imagine happiness and maybe some frustration on the parents' part," said Lt. Andrew Wright of the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
"We are very grateful that she was found safe."
