WEST BOUNTIFUL, Utah — A Utah Department of Transportation employee suffered a head injury in West Bountiful early Thursday morning.

According to Sgt. Nick Street, a Utah Highway Patrol spokesman, the UDOT employee had been working on a road sign in the far-left lane of southbound I-15, near 400 N, shortly after 4 a.m.

The UDOT employee was getting into the passenger side of a work truck when the driver's side mirror of a passing vehicle hit the worker in the head. The UDOT worker went to the hospital in an ambulance, and Street said the worker's injuries are serious, but non-life threatening.

The driver whose side mirror struck the UDOT worker is not believed to have been impaired and is cooperating with investigators, the Street said.

UHP troopers closed the left two lanes of I-15 near the scene as they continued to investigate the accident.
