WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — One man is dead after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a telephone pole late Saturday night.

According to West Valley Police, there were two vehicles traveling southbound on Redwood Road around 10:30 PM.

One of those vehicles was a Volkswagen, traveling at a high rate of speed and switching lanes, according to witness statements.

That vehicle is believed to have lost control around Redwood Road and Parkway Boulevard, where it then went through a fence and a telephone pole.

The driver, 19-year-old Jesus Torres, was ejected, and declared dead on the scene.

There were no other injuries reported.

The vehicle broke into three pieces, and one of those pieces went into a nearby apartment building at 2530 South Redwood Road.

Residents of the apartment were evacuated while an inspection was conducted.

Power in the area remained out overnight, but Rocky Mountain Power estimated it would be restored by 8:30 AM Sunday morning.
