PAYSON, Utah — Payson police say reports running rampant on social media of abductions at Walmart are strictly rumor.

In a tweet posted Wednesday, the police department said it has received "several phone calls" regarding an increase in abductions at the retail store. However, they went on to claim that in 323 calls for service at Walmart this year, they have found nothing related to abductions.

In August, law enforcement officials in Missouri were forced to issue a statement after claims of multiple abduction attempts in two weeks were made and found to be untrue.

Police worry that fake abduction stories will keep authorities from responding to calls should an actual abduction take place.
