SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police arrested a man Monday night who allegedly beat another man with nanchucks, a traditional martial arts weapon.

Adrian Anthony Melendez, 38, was charged with Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Assault and Intoxication.

According to the police report, the victim was sleeping inside his friends apartment when he was hit by Melendez. After assaulting the victim with the weapon, a bloodied Melendez saw the apartment's owner outside and told him to "go check on your homie."

The owner found the victim losing consciousness and with blood on his head. The nunchucks were found at the foot of the bed along with military dog tags belonging to Melendez.

When officers arrived on the scene, Melendez admitted to striking the victim but refused to answer questions, only telling police the victim is a "pedophile."

Melendez was described in the police report as having red, glossy eyes and a strong, persistent odor of alcohol on his breath.

The apartment's owner says Melendez did not have permission to enter his unit. The owner also told police he had seen previously seen Melendez with nunchucks.

The victim is currently in stable condition.
