SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Division of Emergency Management and local nonprofits are urging Utahns to donate wood from trees knocked down in Monday night's windstorm to Native Americans who rely on firewood for heat during the winter.

The Urban Indian Center and Utah Navajo Health System say that the wood, which must be no longer than four feet, will be a major help — especially for elderly members of the tribes.

Firewood can be dropped off at:

  • The Urban Indian Center, 120 W. 300 South, Salt Lake City
  • Esther's Garden, 2425 E. Heritage Way (2760 South), Salt Lake City

Drop-off locations are open Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday-Thursday* from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Volunteers can help with cutting, pickup and drop off as well. Anyone interested is advised to email info@ihawc.org or call volunteer coordinator Donna Eldridge at (801) 906-9835.

*This previously stated that dropoff was open Sunday, Monday and Thursday and has been changed to the correct days, Sunday through Thursday.
