BEAVERTON, Oreg. — A mother who left her child in the back seat of a car that was stolen was berated by the crook who took the vehicle.

The Oregon woman left her 4-year-old child inside an SUV Saturday when she went inside a Beaverton store to buy milk and meat, The Oregonian reports. Police say she left the vehicle running while she went shopping.

A thief saw the SUV unlocked and took advantage of the opportunity. However, after stealing the vehicle from outside the store, the crook saw the child in the back seat and quickly returned to the market.

Once at the store, the crook yelled at the mom for leaving a child in the car all alone and demanded she remove the child.

After threatening to call the police on the mother for being neglectful, the man got back into the SUV and stole it again. Authorities are still looking for the suspect and the vehicle.

“What she did was not a crime. She was within sight and sound of her child,” Officer Matt Henderson said. “But she left the car running, so take that extra step, take the keys with you. It’s a good reminder to take extra precaution when we have our little ones with us.”
