September is hunger action month and this year there are more families who need a little help Smith's is stepping up and you can too.
Smith's Food & Drug Store has been on the frontlines to ensure everyone has access to the food, services and products they need during this unprecedented pandemic.
Aubriana Martindale from Smith`s Corporate Affairs Office tells us that Hunger Action Month is a time for people all over Utah to stand against hunger.
Did you know that more than 1 in 5 kids are food insecure. Often families must choose between buying food, medications or paying rent. Children who fight hunger suffer an inability to concentrate, have lower test scores and often fall behind academically.
The pandemic has caused more families to seek help from food banks. It is estimated that 4 in 10 people visiting a food bank now need assistance as a result of COVID-19.
Experiencing hunger during childhood can have a life-long impact on mental and physical health and educational achievement.
Something we can all do is shopping smart at the grocery store. In order to reduce food waste, only buy food that we're going to eat. Also when you prepare meals, don`t overcook food that will sit the fridge and go to waste. You can also compost food at home.
You can also donate to local food banks and food pantries.
