SANDY, Utah — Real Salt Lake defeated the New York Red Bulls 2-0 in their home opener at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday night.

Nearly 17,000 fans braved the cold, windy weather at Rio Tinto Stadium to welcome RSL home after their upset of the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy 3-1 last weekend.

The first RSL goal came in the 39th minute with a Paulo Jr. pass to Fabian Espindola to put them in the lead 1-0.

The second and final goal of the night came from Luis Gil in the 58th minute to put RSL up 2-0.

Dane Richards, Kenny Cooper, and Markus Holgersson of the Red Bulls; and Luis Gil from RSL all received yellow cards.

Real Salt Lake hosts Chivas USA next Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
