Magna man arrested after standoff with police

MAGNA, Utah -- Police evacuated several neighboring homes as a precaution Tuesday night during a Police standoff in Magna.

It began at approximately 6:30 pm.m at 3243 South 7730 West. A man allegedly barricaded his girlfriend in a bedroom and would not allow her out.

Police arrested Toby Ward, 40.

The woman was able to call the Ward's mother to alert her about the situation. Ward's mother came over to the home, but Ward refused her entry. The mother called police for help.

Police said they had to send in a SWAT team to rescue the 40-year-old woman.

"Our SWAT team made entry inside that room where the suspect had been taken into custody and the victims, his ex-girlfriend was safely rescued from that room," said Lt. Justin Hoyal, Unified Police Department.

Police said they have a history with Ward, he does suffer from mental illness. He was booked into Salt Lake County jail and faces several charges, including kidnapping.

There were no injuries in this incident.
