WEST JORDAN, Utah -- A West Jordan family was awakened early Friday morning by a loud explosion that resulted from a fire that started in their garage.

The fire started around 4 a.m. at 7512 S 4950 W, near Jordan Landing.

When they got outside, the homeowners could see flames shooting from the house.

"[I was] stunned. It's kind of one of those things you think it'll never happen to you," said homeowner Randy Nelson.

Firefighters had to open up the roof and fight the fire from above. The blaze was extinguished by 5 a.m.

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze mostly contained to the garage area.

The residents are displaced while repairs are made. It's expected to take about six months for the smoke damage to be fixed.

Investigators are still looking into a cause.
