‘More Cops More Stops’ program aims to reduce deaths on I-80

SALT LAKE CITY – Police are increasing enforcement along I-80 in several states this month in an attempt to reduce the number of traffic related deaths.

The new program is called More Cops More Stops, and it begins Wednesday and continues until the end of July.

Utah Highway Patrol personnel are teaming up with officers from California to New Jersey for the program. Danny Fuhr, Utah Highway Patrol superintendent, said they are focusing on five key issues.

“We’re after the five things that kill people, which are speed, seat belt, DUI drivers, distracted drivers, and drowsy drivers—and by far the worst of all of those factors is seat belts,” he said.

Fuhr said 70 percent of the deaths they investigate on Utah roads are people who were not wearing seat belts.
