A missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was killed Saturday while serving in Colombia, according to LDS Church spokesperson Ruth Todd.
Todd said Elder Jose Daniel Encarnacion Montero, 20, died after he was hit by a stray bullet in Cali, Colombia. She said he was with his companion and two other missionaries at the time of the shooting. No one else was reported injured.
Todd said Elder Montero was from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and had been serving in Colombia since August, 2012.
“Elder Encarnacion’s passing will be deeply felt in the mission and by all who knew him,” Todd said in a press release. “We grieve with his family and friends during a time of mourning and extend to them our love, prayers and deepest sympathy.”
Colombia police are still investigating the incident.
