OREM, Utah -- Two suspects allegedly involved in a car crash turned murder investigation appeared in court Wednesday.
It all began Tuesday when a 42-year-old driver involved in a car crash on 800 North in Orem was found with a gunshot wound in his back. The driver, identified as Rupert Miley, later died at a local hospital.
French, the alleged shooter in the murder, was given a $1 million cash only bond, while his suspected accomplice, Waldron, was denied bail altogether.
Officers said they now have a better idea about a motive in the homicide. They said the suspects were drunk and angry over a past drug deal with Miley.
According to police, French stole a handgun from his father, then he and Waldron met up with Miley. The three men were all together in Miley's car when French, sitting in the back seat, shot Miley in the back through the seat.
Officers said Waldron jumped from the moving car before it crashed, and ran off. Police arrested French at the scene, then later busted Waldron. Both face homicide charges.
Waldron is a prior convicted felon who faces an additional charge of being a restricted person in possession of a firearm.
Both men will remain in the Utah County Jail until their arraignment.
