MOAB, Utah — A Moab man died after a BASE jumping accident Saturday.

Officers said Daniel Moore, 22, was BASE jumping off cliffs near State Road 128 around 4:15 p.m.

According to a press release, Witnesses said Moore appeared to be in an “unusually head high position,” and was waving his arms to gain stability. Once he gained stability, he attempted to reach back and grab his parachute release, but missed it. He was successful on his second attempt, but the parachute deployed too late and he hit the ground.

Grand County search and rescue teams and police officers responded to the accident. They said it took about four hours to recover Moore’s body due to treacherous conditions created by a recent snow storm.

Officers said Moore was an experienced BASE jumper, and was jumping in a well-known area used by other BASE jumpers.
