(CNN) — Derek Jeter, who helped the Yankees win five World Series during his first 19 seasons, announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of the 2014 major league baseball season, the shortstop said on his Facebook page.
“The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball,” the Yankees captain said in a note posted on the social media site.
He added: “I know they say that when you dream you eventually wake up. Well, for some reason, I’ve never had to wake up. Not just because of my time as a New York Yankee but also because I am living my dream every single day.”
