CACHE COUNTY, Utah – A 2-year-old boy has died after being accidentally shot by a sibling Friday evening.

Crews responded to a home in the southwest area of unincorporated Cache County at about 6:40 p.m.

Police believe a 3-year-old sibling of the 2-year-old boy found a gun that was stored behind a door in the home and accidentally shot him in the abdomen.

A press release from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office stated the child was shot with a .22 rifle. The release stated that other family members, including the child’s parents, were at the residence when the incident occurred.

The boy was transported to Logan Regional Hospital and underwent surgery before being flown via LifeFlight to Salt Lake City, where he later died.

Police are still investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, including how the toddler’s sibling was able to access the gun.
