Akron, OH (WJW) — Police are investigating a school bus accident that killed a bus driver.
The woman has been identified as Laura Zborowski, 41, of Akron.
The accident happened Tuesday morning at Middlebury Academy on Kent Drive. It’s a K-8 charter school in Akron.
The bus was parked outside of the school just before classes started.
Lt. Rick Edwards with the Akron Police Department said Zborowski was doing evacuation drills with about 38 students.
After one successful drill using a side door, the students boarded the bus again to practice exiting the back of the bus.
Edwards said as the last student was getting off the bus, the bus started to roll. Zborowski threw the child to safety but there was no time to get out of the way.
The bus rolled over the driver and dragged her halfway down a hill.
“And she did what she does every day, and that’s to protect these children,” said Edwards.
The bus finally came to a rest in a yard.
Zborowski was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Bus company, Petermann, released the following statement:
“We are sad to confirm that one of our bus drivers passed away this morning while assisting in a rear exit evacuation drill… We are working with local authorities and conducting an internal investigation of the incident.”
