UTAH – A woman was killed and three of her sons are in serious condition after a rollover crash that occurred on I-70 Sunday afternoon.
According to information from the Utah Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred on I-70 near mile post 201 around 2:40 p.m.
Officials said witnesses reported seeing the right, rear wheel break off of a pickup truck traveling eastbound. The truck skidded out of control and went into the median, where it rolled several times. Officials later said they believe the tire was flat and caused the driver to lose control of the truck.
The vehicle was being driven by a woman and her three sons were inside. Officials said it appears seat belts were used but failed to properly restrain the mother and one of the sons, a 14-year-old male. Those two were ejected during the crash.
The mother died at the scene of the crash. The three boys–ages 14, 12 and 7–were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado in serious condition. They were flown by medical helicopter.
Police later identified the woman who was killed as 51-year-old Rita Miramontes of Phoenix, Arizona.
