BRIGHAM CITY, Utah — A man who police said admitted to killing his ex-wife at her Brigham City apartment was formally charged Thursday.

Spencer Gerlach, 20, faces charges of murder and commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child in connection with the April 15 death of 19-year-old Keltsie Gerlach.

Brigham City Police Chief Mike Nelsen said the alleged murder occurred at an apartment located at 691 South 600 East during a domestic dispute between the divorced couple.

Police said Gerlach called 911 at about 12:30 p.m. that day and admitted he had stabbed Keltsie Gerlach to death.  When authorities arrived, they found Spencer Gerlach waiting for them. Keltsie Gerlach was found dead in the living room with stab wounds.

Nelsen said the couple had recently gotten divorced and that Keltsie Gerlach lived at the apartment alone with her daughter, a 15-month-old girl.

The 15-month-old girl was found in a crib at the residence and was unharmed. The child was taken by personnel with the Division of Child and Family Services.

Spencer Gerlach was arrested and booked into the Box Elder County Jail.
