UTAH COUNTY -- It was an epic series on the baseball diamond last week between rivals Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove. The Vikings entered the 3-game set undefeated at 15-0 and ranked 6th nationally by USA Today, but they suffered their first defeat after Lone Peak's senior shortstop Nick Whitaker nailed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 8th.
The Knights held a 4-1 lead in that one before Pleasant Grove rallied to tie it with 3 runs in the 7th and force extra innings. That's when Whitaker sent the home crowd out in Highland into a bases clearing frenzy.
The Vikings responded with Game 2 at their place, a bout that also finished as a one-run contest ending in the 8th. But Lone Peak took the series with a 9-2 victory in game 3. These two 5A powers could meet late again late in the playoffs for a shot at a state championship.
