WHITTIER, Calif. – Authorities in California are investigating the death of a 19-year-old student who has special needs who was found on a school bus Friday afternoon after his mother called to report he had not returned from school.

KTLA in Los Angeles reports 19-year-old Hun Joon Lee was found unresponsive in a bus operated by Pupil Transportation that had picked him up Friday morning to take him to Sierra Vista Adult School.

Police are reportedly investigating the possibility Lee was left in the bus all day, as they have received reports the student never got off the bus.

When the man didn’t return home from school by 4 p.m., his mother called to check on him, and her son was ultimately found in the bus, which at that time was parked outside a local high school. Whittier is about 12 miles from Los Angeles.

KTLA reports when responders answering the 911 call arrived at the bus yard, they found bus drivers attempting CPR on Lee.

The driver of the bus was questioned by police and released.

The cause of death is unknown at this time and under investigation.
