KEARNS, Utah — A Herriman teenager has died after he was hit by an SUV while riding a motorized scooter in Kearns.
The crash happened around 11 p.m. Monday near 5600 W 5100 S. Police said 18-year-old Landen Hickmon was trying to make a left turn into a neighborhood when the SUV pulled out in front of him and collided with the scooter.
Hickmon was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition and he died at the hospital.
Police don’t believe he was wearing a helmet.
“We always have to emphasize that these helmets are a huge safety for our motorcycle riders and something that really saves our motorcycle riders’ lives,” said Sgt. Shane Manwaring, Unified Police Department. “Another big safety thing we like to talk about is we need to start seeing bicyclists and motorcycle riders.”
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Police said the driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and has been cooperative.
