Sandy couple displaced after house fire

Posted

SANDY, Utah -- A Sandy couple was displaced after a fire damaged their home Sunday evening.

Sandy Fire responded to the blaze at about 4 p.m. in the area of 8300 South and 1100 East. When they arrived on scene, firefighters could see smoke coming from the house.

The homeowners were not home at the fire but their pets were caught inside.

Crews fought the fire offensively and discovered the origin in the floor joists of a bathroom, officials said.

“We found a dog and cat,” said Battalion Chief Matt Stuebner of Sandy Fire. “The dog we were able to treat with oxygen and was able to recover. The cat was unable to recover and has passed on.”

The home suffered about $100,000 in damage with the downstairs bathroom completely destroyed.

Crews were able to keep flames from spreading to surrounding homes.

The cause of fire is under investigation.
