Man dies after participating in ‘Krispy Kreme Challenge’ race

RALEIGH, N.C. — A man running in a “Krispy Kreme Challenge” race in North Carolina died on Saturday after dropping out of the race because of chest pains, according to race organizers.

The 58-year-old man left the race within the first mile on Saturday morning and was taken to Rex Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

“We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones,” read a statement, in part, posted to the Krispy Kreme Challenge Facebook page.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge is an annual race which is organized by North Carolina State University students and benefits the N.C. Children’s Hospital.
