The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, and several team members with Utah ties were part of it.

It was the battle of the best offense versus the best defense.

For most of Super Bowl 54 on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers lived up to the mantra “Defense Wins Championships.”

But Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs would not be denied. Kansas City broke its 50-year Super Bowl drought, rallying to top San Francisco 31-20.

The Chiefs rallied from a 20-10 deficit with three unanswered touchdowns in the final 6:13. Not only did the Chiefs make a furious rally, but it was Kansas City providing the championship-level defense by stymying Jimmy Garoppolo and the 49ers offense in the fourth quarter.

San Francisco was denied its sixth Super Bowl in club history. Kansas City won its second Super Bowl in club history, the first since the 1969 season.

This is the first Super Bowl win for Andy Reid — the Chiefs’ head coach and a Brigham Young University football alumnus. Reid graduated from BYU in 1981.

Until Sunday, Reid had the most wins by a head coach without ever winning a Super Bowl or NFL Championship, according to NFL.com, with 207 career regular-season wins and 14 career playoff wins. Reid has been so successful that he’s been a head coach for 21 straight years, for only two teams.

Reid is now the first coach in NFL history to win his first Super Bowl after 20+ seasons as a head coach.

Reid is the seventh-winningest coach in NFL history. The coaches ahead of him have won a combined 24 NFL and Super Bowl titles, and are all except Reid and Bill Belichick are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The win is also a momentous feat for Utahn Jackson Barton, an alumnus of the University of Utah and Brighton High School.

Utah State University alumnus Darwin Thompson also earned a Super Bowl ring Sunday night. The rookie running back had one rush attempt for the Chiefs.

Daniel Sorensen, a 6th-year safety with the Chiefs, is also a BYU alum.

A pair of Mahomes touchdowns put Kansas City up 24-20 after Mahomes previously had thrown two interceptions. Then, Damien Williams iced the game with a 38-yard run, clinching the win in the final minutes.

After the 49ers got on the board with a 38-yard field goal, the Chiefs took a 7-3 lead on a QB run by Mahomes at the end of the first quarter.

Kansas City tacked on a 31-yard field goal to lead 10-3.

The 49ers tied the game at 10 with 5:05 left thanks to a 15-yard pass to Kyle Juszczyk from Garoppolo.

The game remained tied into the third quarter when the 49ers took a 13-10 lead on a 42-yard field goal.

The 49ers added a touchdown late in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Raheem Mostert to take its largest lead of the game at 20-20.
