OGDEN, Utah — A COVID-19 outbreak at the Weber County Jail was reported Wednesday evening.

According to a news release from the Weber County Sheriff's Office, 82 inmates and one employee at the 12th street facility have tested positive for COVID-19.

It says jail administrators are working closely with community partners including the Weber-Morgan Health Department, the Utah Department of Health, the local courts, the Weber County Attorney’s Office and the medical contractor (Vital Core Health Strategies) to address the concerns, reduce the spread as much as possible and provide the very best medical care to those that have tested positive.

The medical contractor is hiring additional personnel, above the contract, to help manage the outbreak, the news release said.

The jail has been and will continue to work closely with the Weber County Attorney’s Office and the courts to identify those inmates that are at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19 for potential early release or alternative sentencing options.
