PROVO, Utah — A 21-year-old woman and her 2-year-old child are in very serious condition after being hit by a FrontRunner train Saturday afternoon in Provo*.

According to Utah Transit Authority spokesman Carl Arky, the two were at the train crossing at 500 South and 900 West when the gates were down and lights were flashing at about 3:30 p.m.

The woman attempted to beat the coming train and went around the gate, but she and the child were both hit. They were both transported to nearby hospitals in "very serious" condition; the 2-year-old was flown to Primary Children's Hospital.

UTA reminds pedestrians and drivers alike to never try to beat a train at a railroad crossing and to always wait until the gates are up and lights are no longer flashing before crossing.
