HILL AFB, Utah — The Hill Air Force Base runway was closed Monday after a fighter jet experienced a landing gear malfunction.
According to a Hill AFB spokesperson, the landing gear on an F-35A Lightning II collapsed after the jet landed around 10:45 a.m. The plane was part of the 388th Fighter Wing and was going through a routine training flight.
The accident will be reviewed by a formal safety review board.
The pilot was able to get out of the plane and underwent a routine medical evaluation. There was no word on their condition or the level of damage to the aircraft.
The base closed the runway, and airplanes that had taken off and were scheduled to return to the base were diverted to other airports. Training flights were also paused until the reopening of the runway.
