SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on I-80 Sunday night.
Around 10:50 p.m. a motorist reported seeing a four door silver sedan traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes near Saltair.
The trooper slowed down traffic as he traveled toward the reported wrong way vehicle. It was traveling at slower speeds and did not respond to the trooper’s emergency lights.
The trooper performed a "pit maneuver" by moving to the right shoulder and then turning into the rear of the vehicle to spin it and stop it.
The crash was minor, but the trooper’s car was disabled.
The driver and the trooper were both checked at the scene and were not injured.
The driver of the wrong way-vehicle was arrested for DUI.
In a news release, the UHP credited the quick action of the motorist who called 911, the professionalism of the highway patrol dispatch and the troopers for stopping this vehicle before it was involved in any accidents.
