PARK CITY, Utah — Park City has canceled all Independence Day festivities for 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns.

Announced Monday, the Park City Council agreed last week to cancel the annual events, including the parade, fireworks show and volleyball tournament. City leaders cited an effort to avoid mass gatherings in light of the recent statewide and nationwide spike in coronavirus cases.

"This decision came following the advice of the County Health Department, in response to widespread resident concern, and by our own determination that there’s no way to safely mitigate mass gatherings like this. We encourage our residents to celebrate July 4th with their families and close friends, masked, distanced and from the safety of their own neighborhoods,” Mayor Andy Beerman said.

The city will be expanding its weekly "car-free Sundays" this weekend so that on Saturday, July 4, Main Street will only be accessible to pedestrians.
