President Joe Biden hopes the Christmas holiday will bring people together, especially those of differing political views.

"I sincerely hope this holiday season will drain the poison that has infected our politics," Biden said in a Christmas address from the White House on Tuesday.

The president reflected on 2022, saying COVID no longer controls people's lives. He noted that children are back in school and more people are working.

"Americans are building again, innovating again, dreaming again," Biden said.

Christmas isn't always a joyous time. Biden reflected on the loss of his first wife and infant daughter. They were killed in a car accident 50 years ago when they were out shopping for a Christmas tree.

"I know how hard this time of year can be, but here's what I learned long ago— no one can ever know what someone else is going through," Biden said.

He encouraged Americans to be kind, noting how it can brighten someone's day and potentially save a life.

"This Christmas, let's be that helping hand, that strong shoulder, that friendly voice," Biden said.
