SALT LAKE CITY — A person is in critical condition following being struck by a vehicle near the Salt Lake City Parks & Public Lands building at 1965 West 500 South.

According to Salt Lake City police, the call on the incident first came in at 6:30 a.m. Friday and officers who were in the area were able to quickly respond.

Detective Greg Lovell with the department says that the pedestrian was in the crosswalk at the time they were struck but investigators are looking into whether or not the HAWK system was activated at the time the pedestrian was crossing.

The HAWK System is a traffic beacon designed to provide crossing signals for pedestrians on roads that don't have traditional traffic signals.

Police say the driver of the vehicle did stay on the scene and is cooperating with their investigation.
